A Short History of Woodford

In the Middle Ages Woodford was a small hamlet in the parish of Prestbury, and land here was granted to the Davenport family in 1355. New Hall, a Grade II* listed farmhouse, carries a lintel dated 1630, and Christ Church was completed in 1841. Woodford became part of the Hazel Grove and Bramhall Urban District in 1939 and joined the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport in 1974. The River Dean still marks the boundary with Cheshire.

For most of the 20th century Woodford was best known for its aerodrome. Avro opened the airfield in the 1920s, and thousands of aircraft were built here, including more than 4,000 Avro Lancasters. The site closed after BAE Systems ended production, and since 2016 it has been transformed into Woodford Garden Village. The Avro Heritage Museum in the old fire station keeps that history alive.
